Cannabis, also famous as Marijuana, is a music to some ears at HIGH TIMES. Particularly, for smokers, it is a blessing in disguise that provides moments of pleasures.

Though, the reality is the cannabis plants isn't just for smokers. It has lots of other health benefits that are baffling the brains of scientists and compelling them to do more research on it.

It doesn't matter why you are interested in Cannabis. But, if you are pondering regarding growing a marijuana plant,

I know there must be lots of question revolving around your mind. You are likely unsure or indecisive regarding how to begin.
Before we reveal how to grow marijuana, there are a few important facts you must perceive.

  • It can be grown easily and anywhere. Even a beginner, without any knowledge about planting, can do it. So, remove any fear in case you think it is going to be difficult.
  • It is a flowering plant. Therefore, it bears fruit only once in a year. And, this happens during the fall season especially when the daylight hours are shorter.
  • For that reason, if you are growing a marijuana plant indoor, indoor lighting plays a vital part. It decides whether it is going to be well-developed and reach true height or not.
A beginner should focus on growing one plant only. It is more beneficial than growing a whole garden. Since, with only one plant, you can focus better and learn more about what it takes to handle it. Second, large scale growing operation can put you in trouble. We agree, it is allowed in many states in the USA, but still you can't afford the attention of law enforcement agencies. Plus, one plant is far easier to hide. You can grow it among other indoor plants. Law enforcement agencies don't bother about one plant too. They need a bigger fish to fry, not a small one.

Other than that, large scale growing setup requires lots of investment, equipment and resources. For a newbie, it is tough. But, growing one plant is extremely inexpensive.
Step #1: How Much Time Does It Take?

"4 Months!". Yes, it requires four months to grow. We know it isn't exactly a step, but most people think about this question. Everyone wants to know how much time he needs to acquire the desired result.

In most cases, it takes around three months until harvest for most strains. This time duration can up and down, depends on the strain. Some strains take just a little less; some strains take longer - especially if you are growing big plants.

After harvesting process, the cannabis buds take around a week to dry. Once the buds dry, the professional growers recommend two weeks for cure. According to them, the two week cure time gives smoother taste and high perceived potency.

On the whole, there is at least 4 months of investment for a cannabis to harvest. 3+ months for a seed to harvest, one week for drying, and two weeks for curing.

Step #2 - Choose a Growing Light

Of course, sunlight is important. If you can expose the cannabis plant to a lot of sunlight, it is brilliant. However, you still need more light to get the best results.

You need a lamp! And, it is going to be the most expensive part (only) of the process. Please, remember that we aren't talking about the desk lamp or floor lamp. The lamps for growing plants are different. They are designed specifically for this process. Some people think that all they need is a 250-Watt HID  (high intensity discharge) bulb to complete the process. But, this isn't correct. These bulbs require additional things as well, such as specialized HID fixture, because they don't screw into any standard home fixture safely.

In addition, the kind of light you require depends on the location of plant too. If it is next to a window that provides lots of sun light, a fluorescent bulb is the best bet. It can add extra lighting hours to your plant once the sun goes down.

On the other hand, if there isn't any window setup, it is must to invest a tad more. You need to get a 250-watt HID lamp, which is developed with all the other features for indoor plants. It has both HPS bulbs and MH bulbs.

How do you know you are providing the best light? It is simple. If there is more upward growth than outward growth, it means you are NOT providing enough light.

Step #3 - Choose The Growing Medium

This step is as important as choosing the light. If we say, all depends on this step, it would be correct. Each medium requires a different care and watering.

The four most common mediums are soil, soilless mix, directly in water (hydroponics), and less common types of hydro. Among all these mediums, soil is of course the best option. It provides the easiest growing experience... In order to get the finest results, purchase composted soil. It provides incredible taste results.

Some growers prefer pre made mixers too. They often use Fox Farms Ocean Forest Soil (FFOF). When we interviewed the FFOF growers and asked regarding their experience, they revealed that it is rich in nutrients. Especially, for a young cannabis plant, it works so well. Therefore, we believe if it's your first time, you can opt for Fox Farms Ocean Forest Soil too.

There are some other less common mediums too like hydroponics and et cetera. However, they are relatively less common among professional cannabis grower.
Concluding Thoughts

Lastly, all we want to say is that if you are planning to get a small container for growing cannabis plant, make sure it is breathable. Besides, watering should be moderate. Never let your plant sit in stagnant water. It invites bugs & molds which aren't better for the growth. But, at the same time, remember that the bottom roots should have water access.

When it comes to cannabis, experts recommend watering a large amount at once, so that the water can touch the roots, rather than watering a small amount more often. The container should have proper drainage system too. You should see the water coming out the bottom. That's why, the fabric pots for cannabis plants are quite popular, as water can be drained easily.
