What is Nutritional Therapy?

Nutritional therapy is use of nutrition science to promote optimum health or help manage chronic disease. The primary focus is improving physiologic functions of various bodily systems such as immune, endocrine, digestive and cardiovascular systems[2].

There are numerous reasons why a person seek nutritional therapy. Some may simply want to see if they are on the right path with their diet while other have more specific reasons, for instance – seeking aid for a certain medical condition or losing weight.

Who will Benefit from Nutrition Therapy?

Nutritional therapy can benefit nearly everyone, from kids to adults, the elderly, pregnant women and couples. Unfortunately, this isn’t an approach that everyone is willing to take. Nutritional therapy may not be for if you:
  • Are not ready to prioritize your health
  • Are not prepared to commit to dietary changes
  • Don’t believe that anything you take inside your body can affect how you perform and feel.
What Nutritional Therapy Can Do For You

Nutritional therapy can contribute significant effects to your body and general health. It helps the body endure medications, surgery or medical treatments, supports the immune system, helps prevent waisting and helps promote longevity and better quality of life.

In addition, nutritional therapy supports to attain emotional and psychological well being, optimum energy levels, healthy blood sugar and gut health and tolerance to a wide range of food.

Nutritional therapy centers on what you can eat rather than what you can’t. It encourages healthy overall diet and dispels food qualms. Nutritional therapy guides you with nutritional facts to prevent guilt and worries that the person might not eating the right way.

Indeed, you’ll be surprised at the change you’ll notice from creating small modifications to your diet and the various conditions that nutritional therapy can enhance, not just for your weight but even your mood!
Why is Nutritional Therapy Important?

To be able to understand the importance of proper nutritional guidance, it is vital to learn the role of food and nutrition and the connection between diseases and modern diet.

Many years ago, our food was fresh and was mostly cultivated locally. Yet today, most of the food we eat, whether in school, at restaurants or at home, are loaded with chemical additives, sugar and harmful fats.

Numerous researches reveal that huge consumption of sugar can lead to various metabolic problems such as elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome[3]. In addition, refined sugar is considered as one of the primary causes of many chronic diseases such as cancer, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.  In other words Medical Nutritional Therapy!!

Alcohol consumption has been linked to a number of diseases, which affects the quality of life and even lead to death. These conditions include Vitamin A depletion, malnutrition, folate deficiency, liver disease, obesity/excess weight, liver disease, just to name a few.

These discrepancies between our bodies’ natural metabolic functioning and our modern diet has led to the rise of diseases mentioned previously. The modern diet is the main reason why we become fatter and sicker than before.

So what made us transform from a natural healthy, energetic people to a world filled with sick, overweight and unhappy people? There’s only one reason – it is the TOXINS.

To prevent toxins from building up in your tissues, organs or joints and from causing damage, our body possess four main filters – the Kidney, Liver, Gastrointestinal and Immune. If one of these filters gets congested, it will eventually lead to problems to other filters, severely compromising the body’s protective system.

Toxins enter the body in four ways – through stress, through structure problems, from the environment and through the food we eat.

Processed, irradiated and sprayed foods expose us to loads of toxins that we consume along with food. Most of these chemicals and hormones are used in livestock and poultry raising, while local produce such as fruits and vegetables are sprayed with chemicals before and after harvest.

On top of that, a mixture of food additives and preservatives are used to process foods to make them taste and look better and last longer.

Though we don’t get sick instantly from eating fats, sugar and other processed foods, our bodies eventually accumulate toxins that can lead to a collection of symptoms such as:
  • Allergies
  • Food intolerance
  • Fatigue
  • Constipation, irregular bowel movements
  • Flatulence
  • Frequent colds and congestion
  • Unexplained pains, aches and itches
  • Insomnia
  • Premenstrual symptoms, breast soreness, vaginal infection
  • Skin problems such as rashes, acne and boils

Long-term excessive intake of these foods can significantly increase the likelihood of having chronic diseases.

According to the Nutritional Therapy Association, "Nutritional therapy plays a major role in detoxifying our system from toxin buildup to achieve the right balance for our body. Cleansing and detox through proper nutrition can help the body eliminate toxins that have accumulated over time."  SOURCE
